Warehouse Wi-Fi Surveys

## Who Designs Warehouse Wi-Fi for Scanners and Forklifts in Australia?

**IPTel Solutions designs and surveys warehouse Wi-Fi for barcode scanners, wearable scanners and forklift terminals, with Ekahau-certified engineers based in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.** We model full racking, test the design onsite at real mounting heights before any cabling, and validate every aisle at device height after installation.

Warehouses are one of the hardest places to get Wi-Fi right. Access points are often mounted 11 to 19 metres up, while scanners work between the floor and about 4 metres. Steel racking blocks and reflects the signal, and a design that works in an empty building can fail once the racks are full. Scanners and forklift terminals roam constantly, so a short gap between access points is enough to drop a pick.

Our engineers survey distribution centres, manufacturing and logistics sites in [Brisbane](https://iptel.com.au/services/wi-fi-surveys-brisbane?hsLang=en-au), [Sydney](https://iptel.com.au/services/wi-fi-surveys-sydney?hsLang=en-au) and [Melbourne](https://iptel.com.au/services/wi-fi-surveys-melbourne?hsLang=en-au), and travel to sites across Australia. ## How We Design Warehouse Wi-Fi

Racking aisles

Directional patch antennas at the aisle ends, tilted down about 15 degrees, on alternate ends of neighbouring aisles. On 5 GHz, aisles longer than about 30 metres usually need an access point at both ends.

Mounting

Typically 11 to 19 metres up, stood off 2 to 3 metres from the aisle entry so forklifts with forks raised miss them, and mounted on the front of girders, not behind them.

Coverage grade

Voice-grade coverage (-67 dBm on 5 GHz) down to the bottom of full aisles, because scanners and terminals roam constantly.

Open areas, docks and offices

Omnidirectional access points on drop poles, or wall-mounted patch antennas about 20 metres apart, with their own coverage plan.

Devices

Handheld and wearable barcode scanners, vehicle-mounted and forklift terminals, and voice handsets. The design is driven by the least-capable important device on site.

Roaming

Access point power kept below what the scanners transmit, so devices hear and are heard, and scan lists limited to the channels in use so handhelds roam quickly.

Where we work

Brisbane and South East Queensland, Sydney and NSW, Melbourne and Victoria, plus regional and interstate sites.

The Warehouse Survey Process

## Three Stages to Warehouse Wi-Fi That Works

Stage 1

### Predictive Design

Floor plans scaled in Ekahau, racking drawn as attenuation areas, and aisle-end antennas, open areas, docks and offices planned around your scanners and terminals.

Stage 2

### Pre-Deployment Survey

A pole-mounted rig with the exact access point and antenna tests the design at real mounting heights and downtilt. Moving an AP after cabling at 15 metres means a lift and a second visit, so we find problems now.

Stage 3

### Deployment Validation

After install and tuning, we walk every aisle at device height to prove coverage and roaming, ideally with the racking as full as it gets, and record each AP height and downtilt.

Choosing a Provider

## How to Choose a Warehouse Wi-Fi Survey Company

### Ask How They Cover the Aisles

Ceiling-mounted omni access points alone rarely reach the bottom of a full aisle. Ask how the aisles will be covered and at what height.

### Insist on an Onsite Survey

Mounting heights, antenna angles and real racking need testing on site before cabling. A predictive model is only a model until it has been tested in the building.

### Design Around the Scanners

The design should be driven by your scanners and forklift terminals and the coverage grade they need, not by laptops.

### Plan for Full Racking

Stock levels change daily. The design and the validation should assume the racks are full.

### Know What You Will Receive

Expect heatmaps at device height, AP and antenna models, mounting heights and downtilt for each AP, and a markup your cabler can build from.

### Make Sure They Validate the Result

A validation survey after installation proves every aisle meets the design and gives you a baseline for future changes.

## Warehouse Wi-Fi Surveys: FAQs

Who Designs Warehouse Wi-Fi for Scanners and Forklifts in Australia?

IPTel Solutions designs and surveys warehouse Wi-Fi for barcode scanners and forklift terminals, with Ekahau-certified engineers in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. We do predictive design, an onsite survey at real mounting heights before cabling, and validation after installation, and we travel to sites across Australia.

How Much Does a Warehouse Wi-Fi Survey Cost?

It depends on floor area, racking height and density, the number of aisles, mounting heights, site access (lifts, inductions, after-hours work) and the survey stages you need. Aisle count matters more than square metres, because each aisle-end antenna needs its own AP location, cable run and switch port. Tell us about your site and we will quote before any work starts. Our free Wi-Fi AP Estimator gives you a first idea of AP numbers.

Why Does Warehouse Wi-Fi Get Worse When the Racking Is Full?

Stock on steel racking absorbs and reflects Wi-Fi. A network designed or tested in an empty building can leave the bottom of full aisles without coverage, so the design should assume full racking and the validation should be done with the racks as full as possible.

Do We Need an Onsite Survey for a Warehouse?

Yes. Mounting heights of 11 to 19 metres, antenna angles and real racking have to be tested on site before cabling. Fixing a wrong AP position after cabling means a lift, a second visit and new cable runs.

How High Should Warehouse Access Points Be Mounted?

Usually 11 to 19 metres, at the aisle ends, with directional antennas tilted down the aisle so the signal reaches devices working between the floor and about 4 metres. The right height and downtilt for each AP is confirmed in the onsite survey.

Can You Fix Scanner Drop-Outs in an Existing Warehouse?

Yes. A diagnostic survey measures the network at device height down each aisle, checks roaming and power settings, and lines up drop-out times with deliveries and shift changes. You get a practical list of fixes, whether or not IPTel installed the network.

Do You Survey Warehouses Outside Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne?

Yes. Our engineers travel to warehouses, distribution centres and industrial sites in regional areas and across the rest of Australia.

"text" : "It depends on floor area, racking height and density, the number of aisles, mounting heights, site access (lifts, inductions, after-hours work) and the survey stages you need. Aisle count matters more than square metres, because each aisle-end antenna needs its own AP location, cable run and switch port. Tell us about your site and we will quote before any work starts. Our free Wi-Fi AP Estimator gives you a first idea of AP numbers."

"text" : "Stock on steel racking absorbs and reflects Wi-Fi. A network designed or tested in an empty building can leave the bottom of full aisles without coverage, so the design should assume full racking and the validation should be done with the racks as full as possible."

      "@type" : "Answer",
"text" : "Yes. Mounting heights of 11 to 19 metres, antenna angles and real racking have to be tested on site before cabling. Fixing a wrong AP position after cabling means a lift, a second visit and new cable runs."

"text" : "Usually 11 to 19 metres, at the aisle ends, with directional antennas tilted down the aisle so the signal reaches devices working between the floor and about 4 metres. The right height and downtilt for each AP is confirmed in the onsite survey."
