# EIRP Calculator

Work out EIRP from transmit power, cable loss and antenna gain, in dBm and milliwatts. Free, instant and private.

## How to Use the EIRP Calculator

Enter the access point or radio transmit power, the loss in any cable and connectors, and the antenna gain. The calculator gives you the EIRP (effective isotropic radiated power) in dBm and milliwatts, which is the figure regulators and Wi-Fi designers care about.

### EIRP Calculator

Transmit power
dBmmW Cable and connector loss (dB)
Antenna gain (dBi)

EIRP (dBm) = transmit power (dBm) − cable and connector loss (dB) + antenna gain (dBi). The calculation runs in your browser.

## What EIRP Means for Your Wi-Fi Design

Transmit power is what the radio produces. EIRP is what actually leaves the antenna in its strongest direction, after cable losses and antenna gain. Two access points set to the same transmit power can have very different EIRP if one uses an external directional antenna.

EIRP matters for two reasons. Regulators set limits on EIRP, not transmit power, and the coverage cell you design is shaped by EIRP. Read our guide to [EIRP vs transmit power](https://blog.iptel.com.au/what-is-eirp-eirp-vs-transmit-power?hsLang=en-au) for the detail.

## Common dBm to mW Values

0 dBm = 1 mW · 10 dBm = 10 mW · 17 dBm = 50 mW · 20 dBm = 100 mW · 23 dBm = 200 mW · 27 dBm = 500 mW · 30 dBm = 1 W · 36 dBm = 4 W. Every 3 dB roughly doubles or halves the power, and every 10 dB is a factor of ten.

## EIRP Calculator: FAQs

### What Is EIRP?

EIRP (effective isotropic radiated power) is the power a perfect isotropic antenna would need to radiate to match your antenna's strongest direction. It is calculated as transmit power minus cable and connector loss plus antenna gain.

### What Is the Difference Between EIRP and Transmit Power?

Transmit power is measured at the radio. EIRP includes the antenna gain and any losses between the radio and the antenna, so it describes the signal actually radiated. Regulatory limits apply to EIRP.

### What EIRP Limits Apply in Australia?

Wi-Fi in Australia operates under the ACMA Radiocommunications (Low Interference Potential Devices) Class Licence, which sets maximum EIRP for each band. The limit depends on the frequency range, so check the current class licence for the channels you use. Enterprise access points apply the correct limits automatically when the country code is set to Australia.

### Does Higher EIRP Mean Better Wi-Fi?

Not usually. Client devices transmit at much lower power than access points, so turning an AP up can create a link the client can hear but can't answer. Good designs balance AP power with client capability and add access points rather than power.

Designing Wi-Fi With External Antennas?

Our Ekahau-certified engineers design and survey enterprise Wi-Fi across Australia, including warehouses, outdoor areas and high-ceiling sites where antenna choice matters. Get a free, no-obligation Wi-Fi survey quote.
